Gallaway Construction Ltd was appointed to deliver the external envelope and full internal fit-out for a new Control Centre for Transport for Wales. This complex and mission-critical facility was designed to serve as a central operations hub, requiring precise execution and rigorous fire and acoustic standards.

Following the steel frame erection by others, Gallaway began works on the external façade, consisting of a Metsec framed wall system. The lower 3 metres were clad with a fibrous-backed Ibstock Staffordshire Blue brick slip system, in line with strict planning and aesthetic requirements. The upper levels featured Kingspan KS1000AWP insulated panels, completed with aluminium flashings and parapet wall detailing to ensure both function and architectural integrity.

The Taff’s Well Integrated Control Centre was conceived as a mission-critical facility, serving as a central operations hub for Transport for Wales. Its significance demanded precision execution, advanced fire and acoustic performance, and coordination across multiple specialist disciplines. One of the initial challenges arose from structural misalignment in a corner of the pre-installed steel frame, which created issues during the external cladding phase. We had to devise a tailored solution to pack out the brick slip boards and maintain visual consistency and structural tolerance.

Fire safety compliance was another major challenge. The facility required a comprehensive fireproofing system, including 2-hour fire-rated protection for steel beams and key areas. This necessitated meticulous planning and coordination across teams to ensure full compliance with fire regulations without compromising on timeline or quality.

The integration of mechanical and electrical systems also posed logistical complexities. Coordinating service penetrations with internal wall construction involved careful sequencing and precise fire sealing to maintain the integrity of the building’s fire-rated zones.

Finally, material selection was a critical aspect of the project. The client prioritised long-term durability and low maintenance, which meant sourcing robust, high-performance materials that met both functional requirements and planning aesthetics.

We were appointed to deliver both the external envelope and complete internal fit-out of the facility, responding to the project’s technical challenges with innovation and precision.
To address the misaligned steel frame, Gallaway implemented bespoke corrective measures, ensuring that the brick slip system (featuring fibrous-backed Ibstock Staffordshire Blue slips) was installed to exacting tolerances. The external façade was completed with Kingspan insulated cladding on the upper levels and detailed aluminium flashings, resulting in a cohesive and architecturally refined finish.

A Promat-specified fireproofing system was installed throughout the structure, incorporating steel encasements, fire-rated partitions, and Schueco windows rated for 2-hour fire resistance. These elements were seamlessly integrated to meet stringent fire safety requirements.
Internally, we delivered a high-spec fit-out that included partition walls with acoustic and fire ratings, suspended ceilings, sanitaryware, kitchen installations, and a specialist, high-durability paint finish approved by the client. Careful coordination allowed the mechanical and electrical systems to be installed with minimal disruption, with comprehensive firestopping applied to all service penetrations.

Crucially, the project was delivered with strong community impact. Four local joiners were employed throughout and transitioned into full-time roles, while four apprentices gained hands-on experience across multiple trades. Subcontractors were sourced locally wherever possible, supporting the regional economy.
The completed Taff’s Well Integrated Control Centre is now a key operational facility for Transport for Wales. It embodies robust fire safety, airtightness, and long-lasting finishes—delivered on time and in line with the highest technical standards. Gallaway’s involvement not only ensured the success of a technically demanding build but also generated lasting value for the local community and future workforce.
